About Flu Treatment

For most, the flu (also called influenza) is a mild illness and doesn’t require medical care — stay home for at least 24 hours after a fever breaks and avoid contact with others, except to get medical care or other necessities.

Flu symptoms usually come on suddenly — typically within one to four days after infection. Some or all of these symptoms are typical signs of flu:

  • Chills or fever, though not everyone will have a fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • Fatigue (feeling tired)
  • Vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than adults)

The flu viruses circulate year-round. They typically start making people sick in the United States in October, peaking from December to February.

All of our care options offer flu and COVID-19 testing during your visit with your provider.

Antiviral drugs may be a flu treatment option if taken early in the onset of symptoms, especially if you are at high risk of serious complications. When taken promptly, antiviral drugs can ease the flu’s worst symptoms and can shorten the time you feel sick by an average of one day.

Current antiviral drugs can treat cases of influenza types A and B. They have their biggest effect when taken within 48 hours of symptoms first appearing, making rapid diagnosis important. Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections and aren’t effective against viral infections like the flu. Some people may develop a bacterial infection as a result of having the flu.
